Book Summary

The main objective is to deal with the concept of woman in Indian tradition. It is essential to know the status, nature or right of women in modern times. In order to judge or evaluate their position and nature it is necessary to know their status in our tradition or culture. A woman is to be known under the background of a particular culture. The nature and status of woman as found in modern times must have its root in the tradition. A nation’s history and antiquity is known from its culture. Our Indian tradition is rich and diverse in character and hence the position of woman in this tradition needs to be explored. Hence an effort has been made to highlight education, social, political, legal rights of woman as found in Indian tradition starting from the Vedic period to modern times. An endeavour has been done to show the status of woman in the eye of the contemporary thinkers like Gandhiji, Sri Aurobindo and Rabindranath and their interpretation of the tradition on woman has been illumined.
