Book Summary

This book positions Brahmo Samaj leader Protap Chunder Mozoomdar as the originator of the Hindu mission movement to the United States of America in the late 19th century. It is known that Protap Mozoomdar, together with Swami Vivekananda, represented Hinduism at the Parliament of Religions at Chicago in 1893. But what has missed the focus of scholars is that Mozoomdar visited the United States ten years earlier in 1883, making him the pioneer of the Hindu mission movement to the United States.

The book is the first detailed study of Protap Chunder Mozoomdar in America.

It is written through primary research on American newspapers, periodicals, manuscripts, diaries and archival material available in American libraries, and material in possession of the author.

On the whole, the book presents new information of interest to both the general reader and the scholarly community.

For anyone who has any interest at all in the 19th century Indian and Bengali renaissance, in modern Indian-American relations, in early inter-faith relations, in 19th century Unitarians, or in the Brahmo Samaj, Sunrit Mullick's The First Hindu Mission to America: The Pioneering Visits of Protap Chunder Mozoomdar is a fascinating and delightful read, one that will be enjoyed for its informative, insightful, even-handed look into a phase of our history that is too easily forgotten. Initially a doctoral dissertation more than two decades ago, it is wonderful to have this account of one attempt to frame a “universal religion” available to all as a book. It's a wonderful book!

Sunrit Mullick's The First Hindu Mission to America has provided a much-needed antidote to the overly reductive depictions of Orientalist historians. He successfully argues that Protap Chunder Mozoomdar was the first and most well-travelled and well-connected of the late nineteenth century religious visitors. Mullick portrays Mozoomdar's Hindu Protestantism in a more nuanced way than prior historians, who have routinely mistaken Mozoomdar's commitment to Jesus as a sign of weak conversion. This book demonstrates that as the heir to the New Dispensation of the Brahmo Samaj, Mozoomdar crafted a sophisticated and creative universal religion that seamlessly brought together modern science, prophethood, and personal spiritual development.
